Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation

Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation (Physiatry) is the medical specialty concerned with restoring the functional capacity of people who have lost mobility or autonomy due to illness, trauma, surgery or degenerative processes. The rehabilitation doctor diagnoses the functional limitation, prescribes rehabilitative treatment and coordinates the multidisciplinary team.

Unlike the physiotherapist who carries out the manual treatment, the rehabilitation doctor is the specialist who assesses the patient holistically, orders diagnostic tests (electromyography, ultrasound, MRI), establishes the functional diagnosis and prescribes the most appropriate rehabilitation programme: physiotherapy, electrotherapy, orthoses, injections or therapeutic exercise.
